Briccola Wood — Reclaimed Wood from Venice

Water‑aged oak from Venice’s lagoon, selected for its distinctive grain, history, and one‑of‑a‑kind character.

In the world of furniture materials, very few woods carry as much story as Briccola. Originally used as the mooring posts that guide boats through the canals of Venice, each beam spends decades in saltwater before being retired. What remains is oak that has been sculpted by time, tides, and shipworms into something with a completely unique surface and depth.

Wood with visible history

When Briccola wood is sawn into boards, its past life is immediately visible. The grain shows the mark of years in the lagoon – mineral staining, small voids, and the distinctive tracks of marine borers. These are not defects; they are part of the material’s identity and the reason it cannot be confused with standard oak. No two pieces are ever the same, and even neighbouring boards can look dramatically different.

From the lagoon to the workshop

Once the Briccole are removed from the water, they are carefully dried and processed. The outer, heavily weathered layer is trimmed back to reveal sound wood inside, while preserving as much of the original texture as possible along the edges. Boards are then selected and matched for balance: enough character to be clearly Briccola, but still suitable for refined, precise furniture pieces.

Different from conventional oak

Compared with standard oak, Briccola has a more expressive, irregular appearance. Instead of a clean, uniform surface, you see changes in colour, density and texture across the board. In interiors this creates a strong focal point: a table top, bench or panel that reads as a natural artwork and instantly becomes the piece people notice first when they enter the room.

Reclaimed and responsible

Briccola is also a reclaimed material. Each piece has already served a long structural role in Venice before being given a new life indoors. Working with it extends the useful life of the wood, reduces demand for freshly harvested timber and turns an otherwise discarded element into something enduring.

How Hulta Design works with Briccola

At Hulta Design, we work with flat‑cut Briccola boards, not round posts, to ensure stability and precise joinery. The character is in the grain, edges and surface, while the underlying construction follows the same disciplined standards as our other projects. Each piece is engineered for modern use – with careful detailing, reinforcement where needed, and finishes selected to protect the wood without hiding its story.

Briccola is available only for select projects and quantities are limited. We generally recommend it for statement tables, benches, consoles and feature panels, where its distinctive character can be appreciated and where slight variations are seen as a benefit, not a flaw.

Briccola wood is more than a material; it is a record of place and time, transformed into contemporary furniture. If you are considering a statement piece for your home or project, we are happy to discuss whether Briccola is the right choice for you.
